ASME B31.3 vs the line list: where the disagreement starts
ASME B31.3 governs allowable stress, but the values engineers use live in the line list. A short tour of four cross-discipline checks that catch the disagreement early.
ASME B31.3 Process Piping is a tall document. It is also a document an engineer rarely opens during day-to-day design work. The values it governs (allowable stresses, joint efficiencies, design temperature limits) end up baked into the line list and the piping classes. The line list becomes the working surface; B31.3 sits behind it.
This is fine until B31.3 changes. The errata published this year touched clause 304.1.2, the wall thickness calculation. The values that propagate forward from that clause into the piping classes are the ones a designer reads, not the clause itself. When the clause moves, the classes need to move with it.
Four checks
Four cross-discipline checks catch the disagreement at FEL3:
1. Class-to-clause traceability. Every piping class entry should cite the B31.3 clause version it was derived from. When the clause changes, all classes derived from it surface for review.
2. Material-temperature envelope. The line list declares operating temperature; the piping class declares allowable range. The two need to agree, with margin. A line specced at 650°F on a class rated to 700°F looks fine in isolation. But if the class derives from a clause that has tightened the upper bound to 625°F, the line list is silently wrong.
3. Stress at conditions. ASME B31.3 Table A-1 gives allowable stresses at temperature. The line list pressure-temperature pair selects a row. If the row's allowable changed in the errata, the line's hoop-stress safety factor changes with it.
4. Joint efficiency vs NDE level. Joint efficiency in the class implies a non-destructive examination level on the spool. If the class moves from E=0.85 to E=1.0 to accommodate a tightened allowable, the NDE level on the corresponding spec sheet has to move with it.
What the tooling does
These checks are deterministic. Given the B31.3 clause graph, the piping class table, and the line list, an engineer can execute them by hand. It takes time. The thing software does is execute them on every document version, flag the disagreements, and let the engineer focus on the judgment calls.
Closing
Code revisions are not paperwork. When B31.3 ships an erratum, the line list and the piping classes derived from it become questionable until they're reconciled. The discipline of carrying clause-version provenance into the class derivation is what makes the revision recoverable.
